Early morning, badly hungover, I contemplated staying back for the day to catch up on sleep. Instead I decided to soldier on, though the thought of a boat ride with a queasy stomach was incredibly unappealing.
In retrospect I thank god I did, because this day was to be the highlight of my trip. We travelled to Capri Island which was just magic. I mostly wanted to see the famous blue grotto, and I knew time was limited so I decided to pay extra and take a boat directly rather than a bus to the site. Matt from the tour group decided to come with me. We waited a while and eventually, went from ferry boat to rowboat, where the experience truly began. We had to lean right back and the boat guide pulled us via a chain into a small gap in the cave and then for a moment - darkness. As your eyes adjust to the dark, the blue water glows beneath you. Almost fluorescent. Then our rowboat man started to sing. In the echoing cavern his Italian voice was eerie and beautiful and the water around us shimmered. It was truly magical. Nothing like it I could ever relate it to, no way I could ever properly describe it. One of the most amazing moments in my life. All too soon the man instructed us to again lean right back as we were pulled out of the cave through a small gap in the rock. I was on a high after this, it was just incredible. Back at Capri, we still had time to fill, so we caught a bus to Anacapri and then took the chairlift to the very top of Mt Solaro for amazing views. This was great fun, quite a long ride on the chairlift. Back down the scary cliff side roads on a bus way too full for safety we made it back to the group meeting spot. The boat took us around the island before we left, enabling us to see the Green grotto (almost as striking as the blue), and the arch rock. Back to camp and we had a quiet hotel dinner together.
